Wow, that is really cool. When were these 1st used and what followed to replace them? Or is this an art thing more than a photo thing? Either way, it looks fascinating!

It is fascinating indeed! It was invented by Frederick Scott Archer in the XIX century. It is a photographic process (which can be used as a form of art, of course). It’s been replaced by the dry photographic precess with silver gelatine based negatives. You can find more info here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collodion_process
